Kenai

~Pronounced “Keen-Eye”

Just wanted to say how happy we are with the whole experience and with our little guy! He’s already showing us his spunky personality,  and I’m pretty sure he’s going to be a smart little fellow.

He immediately took to his big brother,  our lab, Kitson. He and big sister Pointer, Kass, aren’t quite sure of one another yet,  haha, but they’re already coming around.

Kitson had already shown Kenai the art of sunbathing on the lawn. 😄
Thanks again, Kaylen and Casey

Crazy For

Garden Fresh Carrots

20247911_10100293471947178_6621653713752737520_oThe Weimaraner loves their veggies. The fresher the better. Grandma Terri captured this photo of Maverick (a young Blue Longhair Weimaraner) Crazy for her Garden Fresh Carrots. His big sister (Goldee) is a fan too!20273121_10100293477501048_1441024680_o

Holly Says

They can’t get enough of their carrots!! My moms have even planted each of them their own veggie half barrels. They can’t wait for things to start sprouting!

Many of you who live in Western Oregon know and love Terri Jacobson. She is Grandma extraordinaire and Holly’s Mama too! Beyond those two fabulous roles in her life, she is known to many for her pet and critter photography. She captured these photos last year during a visit to Grandma’s garden.

Things Happen For A Reason! If you would’ve asked me one month ago if I wanted another puppy, I would’ve told you-you were crazy and on drugs, but then we met blue. He had been returned to the breeder for reasons that make no sense to me how could you ever give back a baby!!! ALL puppies are work–Weimers a lot of work. But at the end of the day, they have turned into my favorite dogs! Gunner is so happy to have his new friend!! We love Blue!!! I’m so grateful to have the chance to be in the Weimer family with amazing people and great dogs!! Thank you, Nancy, for bringing this loving baby to me!! ~ Beth

OwyheeStar received word that the puppy (known as Blue) was not working out. Nancy (Weimlover extraordinaire and NW Playdate host) has experience at doing Weimaraner foster care. We contacted her for assistance in picking up Blue, and she also agreed to keep him until we found a second-chance home. Well, as good fortune would have it there was more than one OwyheeStar vetted applicant. Thanks to Nancy’s intervention and transitional work, Blue has made an excellent adjustment to his new family. Thank you, Beth, for bringing him home too! We are happy that he is a fit.

Gunner loves his new brother. If you want to read about young Gunner–click here! Yes, Gunner is a Blue Longhair.

Henry

At One YearFilger's Henry Special

Question From a Weimar Mom

Okay, so Henry is 1. And I’ve learned that 18 months is when you can start running with your dog. I’m kind of confused by this because “run” is so vague with this breed. When Henry is playing catch, and darts across the yard with the speed of wind, I consider this running. It’s strenuous, fast, he breathes heavier, etc. I’ve taken him on a few short runs with me, less than 2 miles, and my observation, even though I run at a 9 minutes/mile pace, he appears to just be walking fast. Obviously I don’t want to cause health issues for him in the future, so I am wondering if you could give me more information. Are short runs with me, less than 5 miles, going to cause joint issues for him if I don’t wait another 6 months? And do you think a 9 minute mile pace is really considered a running pace for a weimeraner? ~Kiley

Knowing when and how to add age-appropriate exercise is hard to define. Being a serious runner means you want to get the maximum benefit from the time you have together. Longer distances and frequent runs will eventually affect their body–just as it does with humans. The extreme athlete typically would benefit from a major medical insurance policy. A torn ACL or ligament can mean a sizeable Veterinary bill. One such injury often leads to another. No one wants to face such a situation. Nevertheless, this type of thing is a reality even if you have done everything right along the way. Insurance–another consideration when speaking of you and the Weimaraner.

Joint development is affected by various things–their DNA, how fast they grow and the amount of high-pact exercise they see before the growth plates close. Typically, we expect the growth plates to close sometime between a year and a year and a half. During this time of development, recommendations are to keep the runs shorter–about 3 miles a day. With the very high-energy Weimaraner, this seems like too little. It is easy to forget the caution when you are trying to achieve a tired Weim pup. In light of this dilemma, we always suggest swimming. The water retrieve is the best and the safest way to burn a lot of energy without causing harm to the developing joints.

Speaking of high impact exercise–things like playing the frisbee is equally hard on the young Weimaraner. Jumping and beating their feet on the pavement should be avoided. The dirt or grass path is much easier, but still, we feel it is wise to hold off on the pounding regime of a long distance runner until they for sure have those growth plates closed. Only an X-ray can determine if the growth plates are closed. So, for the longevity you want, please take to exercising the young Weimaraner with care. Also, we mentioned it earlier–make sure they grow slow. Feeding the large breed (rather than the regular puppy) food is vital to the hips and joints. That puppy chow stuff will fill them out like a butterball and cause them to grow even faster. Slow growth is preferred. Regardless, they grow to adult-looking before the six month birthday. It is shocking!

Rule of Thumb–about three miles should be fine from day one until about a year. From there on out, you have to kind of guess. No one can speak to your exact situation. Of course, the Weimaraner is capable of running more than a nine-minute mile. The biggest concern is the pounding of the pavement or whatever surface on which you run. It is the impact factor because the growth plates are at the end of the bones. Click Here to read a blog on this topic.

More From Kiley

17425926_10155017109079564_5112457838743378612_nPs. I wanted to pass along too how Henry excels at being an active and lazy dog. He loves his walks, loves being outside, but he doesn’t mind being lazy either. Last night I worked and Kevin was out of town, so Henry was in his kennel. I got home this morning, let him out, fed him, and then took him to bed with me this morning. He contently slept with me until 1:30. Exercising him is ideal, but on the days it doesn’t happen, he doesn’t get restless or destructive, he just goes with the flow.
Other than the above questions, Henry has done well with our few runs. He stays to the left, remains mostly focused on me and what is ahead, and doesn’t pull. Henry will be a fabulous running partner for me!!

More Comments from Shela and Cliff

We like to say the Weimaraner has two speeds–on and off. Wiggle your toe while watching TV and they might assume you are getting ready to do something and in turn fly off the sofa.

More than anything the Weimaraner is all about the relationship. If they want to please you and they respect you and you them, it is a beautiful thing. You are off to an awesome beginning. We wish you all the best on your journey.

The very recent birthday celebration didn’t go unnoticed. Goldee (click here to read more about this amazing girl in previous blog posts) is a superstar. Of course, Grandma Terri, keeps us supplied with the professional photos. Holly and Joe keep us in stitches reporting her and Maverick’s antics.

She is the Poster Girl Extraordinaire for the Longhair. Join us in celebrating another year of fun. We sincerely hope she lives long, and continues to do well. Her sweet face is needed in the sometimes toxic world. Thank you, Holly, Joe, and Grandma Terri. You are awesome!

Timber

And It Beginsminors-timber-_20170115_121244561_hdr

Thank you, Shela for the additional information. Your emails have been truly invaluable to us as we are raising a pup for the first time. Timber is settling in very well. She is sleeping in her crate at night and naps there during the day as well. We are all learning the importance of praising Timber’s good behaviors, and are already seeing that payoff, as Timber is already learning what is and isn’t okay to chew on, and that going potty outside results in lots of love 🙂

Weim Crimes

Is A Thing

haffeys-goldee-prima-donnaThe Modeling Mogul Prima Donna (Goldee) has her moments. She loves the camera for the most part. Unless it were to interrupt a search for vermin that might gross out some who adore her. She has been known to nab a mouse or gopher. Recently, the turkey leg search was captured on video. Seriously, poultry is dangerous once it is cooked. They can eat the entire live bird with no ill effect. Cooked bones are another matter. Thank goodness this was more a search than a find.

We are honestly not sure what this says about the humans who love their Weimaraner. haffeys-goldee

Weim Talk

Henry 5.5 months old

                         ….about 50 pounds.

filegers-henry-at-5-5-monthsYesterday my friend made fun of me because a man and women sat down next to us, and they had a Weimaraner. I was talking to them about Henry like I was talking about my human kids. I tried to explain, once you love a Weimaraner you cannot pass up an opportunity to talk to other people who love them. There is something magnetic, beautiful, and special about this breed that just cannot be explained!!!

Luke and Cador

Progress and Improvement

We have both Luke and Cador in training these days. Luke is back to a healthy weight and his coat and ears have totally cleared up. He’s no longer in his crate and has been great with Lilly and Cador. He barks a lot, but we have been working on that and have seen some improvement.

The Young Longhair

Cador is getting big! His coat is beautiful and he’s been a pretty good boy (other than annoying Luke whenever he can). He will reliably sit, lie down, and come. His retrieve is great. Working on his leash skills now.

We took both to the Applegate River last month and are taking them to the coast next week.

Breeder Comment

These angels not only recently brought home Cador (a Blue Longhair) but they adopted Luke. He has been here for quite some time. His family got into a situation that left them no choice but to return him to us. Thankfully that doesn’t happen often. This return scenario was not an ordinary case–this senior couple was saddened beyond words not to be able to get him back. So, he has found a family and home. Everyone is happy for Luke.
