Bo and Luke
Not For Everyone!
~Two At Once
As I sit down to write this Bo (red harness) is figuring out how to sit in my lap ( he barely fits anymore) and Luke (gray harness)is finishing up his laps around the house. I LOVE them, even when they are driving me crazy, I love them! They are so different and so funny and have adapted so well to my life/ our life. Sometimes when I think that I am not sure how I am going to make this work they remind me that they are only 5 months old and incredible!
They still jump some although it is getting better and everyone is always impressed by them and how well they behave. Not to mention they are stunning! Everywhere I go, every time I am at the dog park, it is non stop they are beautiful, lovely, stunning pups. Luke is like silk he definitely got some of Bettee’s coat and Bo is SO athletic!
We Moved!
I did buy them a house with a yard 🙂 We move in about two weeks, they will get their own yard and we will have chickens and be very close to the dog park. They have definitely helped me keep my sanity, lose my sanity and remind me what is important in my life and important to me.A million times a day I am in awe at how silly and adorable they are. They make me smile all the time and bring me such joy! They are privileged pups and don’t spend much time in their crates anymore.Cheers, Erika

Getting two Weimaraner pups at the same time is rarely a good idea. Nevertheless, a few people convince me they can do this thing. Honestly, we were a bit concerned when her life suddenly changed right after they arrived–she pulled it off with style. Not everyone could do that. Those of you challenged by one can only imagine the dynamics of two. Getting them both trained and compliant is just for the strong of heart.
Yes. These two were very different. We think that is a good thing, too! Thanks Erika for the update and all you are doing with and for the boys. And, maybe you didn’t notice, but the sire of the litter was ‘Boone‘.

I just wanted to see how you guys were doing since I haven’t spoken to you for so long. I also wanted to let you know how much we love Troy! When we first got him from the guy in LA in 2009 I was sure it wasn’t going to work. But after keeping to Cliff’s advice of letting him learn from the other two dogs – he melted right in with our home, and into our hearts! Just wanted to touch base with you. God bless!

It is nice to hear from longtime OwyheeStar Weimlovers! Brad has been a faithful fan for more years than we can remember. Troy was his third OwyheeStar. He took the risk to pick him up when things went sideways with his original family. Typically, we don’t do that kind of thing–ask for help. Nonetheless, everyone needs a bit of help from time to time. This rehome situation seemed like something that might be a win-win situation. We are so happy to hear our assessment was accurate. It is outstanding to get this photo and to learn they are doing well. Thank you!
Skye & Haze
The Blue’s Sisters
~ Part One
Skye & Haze will be 5 years old this year! Time has flown by with them,.. it seems like yesterday we were doing the puppy thing. They are spending most of their winter days lounging around the house… on the furniture of course! We take them out for a good run every day, even if they have to plow through the snow…. they look forward to their outdoor play time, and can’t wait for spring!
Competing and Winning Ribbons
Skye loves to compete in AKC Rally competitions and also AKC Nosework competitions. Haze competes in Rally as well and also is working on completing her Excellent title (like Skye) by this summer. Watch for more on Skye and Haze–coming soon to the blog.
We keep the girls in weekly classes at our dog training club to keep them socialized, and to give them something for their minds to work on. We are delighted with our pups and can’t imagine life without them! Blessings to you! ~ Jean & Nancy

Cliff and I are so very proud of all you two (or maybe we should say four) have achieved. It is no small thing. We know what a huge challenge this breed can bring. As you once explained to me Jean–AKC Rally is like Agility on Steriods. What more do we need to say?
Please watch for the two segments — one featuring Skye and the other Haze. Although they are rarely out of each other’s shadow, for a brief moment they will be a star on our blog. We think you will be interested to learn more about them.
Rogue & Rebel

Rebel just turned two years old. He acts older, in that he’s more laid back and shy around strangers. Some of our guests described him as ‘aloof.’ He is still very much a puppy though. He loves to play and antagonize Rogue who turned three back in February. The pair of them get along so well and are very good for each other.Shawn takes them out for a morning walk of 3-6 miles a day. In the heat of the day, they are happy to stay out of the sun and will laze around underfoot in the shade or cool temps of the house.Rogue loves to swing on the hammock. With me, or with guests, it makes no difference. He can almost manage to get up into the hammock on his own, but for now, he needs a little boost. Both enjoy being around the pool but both hate to get in. We imagine they call the pool “The Big Wet” secretly to themselves and are curious about why the people seem to want to be in it.
Rebel has finally grown out of his ‘chew-on-everything’ phase. We’ve been working on a bit of home improvement to correct some of the marking and chewing he did as a puppy. We’re just about finished with new flooring and are looking forward to moving back in. We’ve been feeling a little cramped all piled into one room.We see a lot of Don and Maria who are former customers of yours too.Have a great summer!! Jamie & Shawn

Just Like That
We went to Two!
Things Happen For A Reason! If you would’ve asked me one month ago if I wanted another puppy, I would’ve told you-you were crazy and on drugs, but then we met blue. He had been returned to the breeder for reasons that make no sense to me how could you ever give back a baby!!! ALL puppies are work–Weimers a lot of work. But at the end of the day, they have turned into my favorite dogs! Gunner is so happy to have his new friend!! We love Blue!!! I’m so grateful to have the chance to be in the Weimer family with amazing people and great dogs!! Thank you, Nancy, for bringing this loving baby to me!! ~ Beth

OwyheeStar received word that the puppy (known as Blue) was not working out. Nancy (Weimlover extraordinaire and NW Playdate host) has experience at doing Weimaraner foster care. We contacted her for assistance in picking up Blue, and she also agreed to keep him until we found a second-chance home. Well, as good fortune would have it there was more than one OwyheeStar vetted applicant. Thanks to Nancy’s intervention and transitional work, Blue has made an excellent adjustment to his new family. Thank you, Beth, for bringing him home too! We are happy that he is a fit.

The Unfolding Saga
Coffee Run
I took a couple of pictures on our daily trip to Dutch Bros for coffee this morning. It’s about a 5-minute drive but poor Koda was pooped. LOL! Gabriel wanted his time in the camera too.

It is a process to figure out how you can make things work. There is no simple solution. Possibly it is best to embrace each obstacle and look at it as a bonding experience. What we love the most about this update is how you incorporate the Weim kids into your schedule. Coffee anyone; everyone?

Family Affair
Haze and Skye
We try to take our girls everywhere with us.
This is a trip to Glacier we took last fall. We rented a cabin and the girls liked cabin camping! They love the water and hiking. We take them for rides in the car all the time and they especially like when we go to the coffee hut because they all have treats and Haze and Skye know that we are really there just so they get a treat, and coffee has nothing to do with it-remember always let the Weim think they know who is in charge at least that is what they think well most of the time they are-lol!!

The First Year

Our first year with Gus has been eventful! He has the funniest personality and fits in perfectly with our little family.
We’ve definitely had our challenges but these boys are worth it! It was a slow go getting Otis to warm up to the idea of not being the only fur baby anymore but now he loves having a little brother (don’t tell him we told you that)! They’ve become so silly together and it’s hysterical how different they are. They really are the ying to each other’s yang.
Fun Stuff
We’ve camped, we’ve hiked, we’ve snowshoed. We’ve ran at the beach, jumped through the tall grass, slept in tents, ate snow at the mountain and so much more! We keep in touch with some of our litter mates and sometimes we even get together for big play dates!
Our Goofball Is
Gus is full of energy, curious about everything, and incredibly smart. He is always keeping us on our toes. He is currently 58 pounds of goofball and eats like every meal is his last. He is pretty petite in stature which only adds to the cuteness factor 🙂 We think he’ll be smaller than Otis (who just turned 5 by the way!!) and have no complaints about that!

It is so great to hear from you folks. Incorporating the second Weimaraner into the family is always an adventure into uncharted territory. You cannot afford to assume that they will be like the first because each is unique. Approaching this journey with patience and letting it unfold is always the right approach. It ‘s nice to have two different personalities–especially if one feels they are in charge. You never want two vying for the top position. If one is content to follow the other and to be a co-conspirator, it is a good thing.
Two Weimaraner are a catalyst for the unknown. They can work together to open a gate latch. We used to watch a couple at work. The one would take the top latch and the other the bottom latch. If the gate came open, there was nowhere to go, but it was a game. We marveled at these and other plots over the years. To live with two is to understand the meeting of the Weimaraner intellect.
Two can become companions of the best kind–inseparable. They can burn energy off each other and then snuggle up on the sofa (if allowed). Typically, we recommend waiting for at least nine months to add a second puppy, rather than getting both at once–ideally 1.5 years to 3 years. The (adding of the second Weimaraner) timeline is a lengthy discussion we will save for another blog.
Featured Weimaraner — Ozzie
Quinn and Ozzie
Ozzie is doing GREAT!
He is soooooo smart (too smart most of the time!) He turned a year old on February 28th and we love him more and more each passing day! We were so lucky to adopt Quinn (a local rescue) to be his sister, since she was so young when we got her, it is like they are growing up together.
Ozzie runs things….
Ozzie is very independent, despite having a sister in the house. He is VERY bossy and loves to somehow manage to get both rawhide bones and will chew on one while closely guarding the other under his front leg. He also is very spoiled, getting to sleep most of the night in the bed with us. Ozzie is very gentle when playing with my little Pomeranian, Pearl, and the cat! He likes to hide next to the refrigerator in the kitchen and when Pearl walks by he takes his paw and puts it on her, then he gets down, lays his head on the rug, and lets her growl and bite his lips. He seems to have such a gentle soul and is this way with all littler animals. He plays really hard with his sister, Quinn, though. Good thing she can give it back as much as she can take it!
Ozzie is a TV hound…

Ozzie also loves to watch National Geographic on TV. He absolutely LOVED watching the Westminster Dog Show! Kept running up to the TV to watch the dogs and then during commercials he would lay on the floor or get on the couch and impatiently wait for it to come back on! Ozzie is such a handsome boy with very strong features! I see pictures of his dad, Blue, and I think he looks just like him!

Ozzie’s birdie, but has not had much field opportunity..
Ozzie hasn’t had much time in the field, though, as my husband had a heart attack in November. The little bit of time Ken spent with Oz in the field this year, he did really well. Ken finally shot a bird in November and Ozzie, only 8 months old, went and got it and brought it right back to Ken. He has a really soft mouth, too!

Quinn the adopted sister…
Quinn is very mild tempered, except when it comes to the littler animals. I think she might have Doggy ADHD AND a little Doggy Autism. lol Ozzie is nothing like her, but her issues could stem from where she came from and how she was treated before I got her. She was not completely housebroken, despite being a year old. I don’t think she had a ton of interaction with the people who had her because she was not allowed in the house. Sad to think that someone who pay that much for a dog (she is papered) and then not give her the time she needs.
Breeder’s Comment: Thank you for sharing the news about Ozzie and Quinn. We are sorry to learn about Ken’s health problems, and glad to know he is on the mend.
Ozzie may be a typical female Weimaraner, that was not raised well as a puppy. No matter how many times we tell people the beginning is vitally important to get right, some don’t understand. Of course, Quinn was not an OwyheeStar Weimaraner. Nonetheless, it is sad that she got off to a bad start. Housebreaking, crate training, and general socialization need to happen in a methodical (matter-of-fact manner) from day one. Failure to do these things results in having behavior issues. A Weim who is given too much freedom will begin to potty inside, and some will make that their preferred bathroom location. (yuck)
These concrete-thinking, sensitive, and intelligent creatures are complex to raise. Too many folks want one for the wrong reasons. It takes a knack to raise one. You have done fantastic with Ozzie, and Quinn is a lucky girl. Yes, people spend big money for a dog, and yet some end up at rescue every day of the week. Isn’t that the saddest thing ever? Here is the kids photo from your Christmas card….
