We all Know her

But Do We Really?

~Can We Comprehend the work she does? Probably not!

Jan and Willow we know them. Willow’s official Name: UKC Best-In-Show and High-In-Trial Champion Sunstar Willow of OwyheeStar, AKC Canine Good Citizen, AKC Novice Trick Dog, UKC Rally Obedience I, UKC Agility I, Therapy Dog International certified!

When Jan isn’t showing Willow, she can be found out and about the community where she works for Des Moines Police Department as an Animal Control Officer. In her spare time, she teaches obedience classes, visits her mother at a care facility, and volunteers. We are honored to know her and to call her a good friend. Our Weim business has factored into our relationship. We have joint-ventured on a couple of things. All of this might be of interest to you, but did you know she is a local town hero? I am sure she would blush at that description–forgive us Jan. The only bigger hero here is Rex, the German Shepherd. What a heartwarming story. Thank you, Jan, for your service. We are all blessed indeed to share the love of the Weimaraner with you.

Sweet Zoe

At Home

In our Arms, and in our Hearts!

Spaulding's Zoe2

All is going well with sweet Zoe! She wanted to be held the whole ride home and has ever since been attached. The first night in the crate was rough, but last night showed a lot of improvement. She’s quickly learning where to do her business and has only had a couple of accidents in the house. She’s eating well & showing good signs of playful activity! We played fetch for about 15 min last night (retrieved every time!) and then she passed out! She’s so intelligent!  She’s at home today with the grandparents who are as equally in love as I am.  She is happy and adjusting very nicely!

Spaulding's Zoe1Uh–the Crate

I think the hardest thing is they bond with you and feel they will forever be in your arms from that moment—unless they bound out to do their own thing. Ha ha, Then we darned humans leave them in the crate. Ha

Thank you for all the communication and very easy process! Yes, she is a smart cookie……thank you, Courtney

Breeder Comment

Dear Courtney–you are correct. It is the most difficult thing to juggle the bonding and the crate-training. Both are necessary components. If the Weimaraner could choose, they would crawl under your skin next to your heart and make it home. They kind of do that, but it absolutely must be balanced with learning how to be away from you. If not, then bad things happen. These various negative occurrences frequently involve destructive behaviors due to the feeling of being abandoned. The Weimaraner is prone to separation anxiety, and it is so darned easy for us to make it worse. Our good intentions often take us from likely to suffer separation anxiety to a severe case. You are doing the right thing. Ultimately, this will help her learn to adapt and become a better-balanced Weimaraner adult. Of course, that is always our goal.

It is so difficult to remember that our good intentions often lead to behavior issues. Before you go with what seems right, it is always a good idea to ask yourself if this is what is best for the Weimaraner. Friends, family, and even some trainers are quick to offer ideas that might not prove beneficial for the long haul. Keep on the path Courtney. You and Zoe are off to a great start. We could not be happier!

Our Friend Jan

If you live near Jan Magnuson, I hope you can take advantage of her All-Breed Training. She has had the Weimaraner 45+ years, and therefore, she knows a thing or two about the breed. Here are a couple of ways you can learn more about Jan and get in touch with her.

Growing Like a Weed

And More

     ~ Cute Faces

Cypress_1305-8x10-HiResCypress weighs 40 pounds now, she is growing like a weed!  She and Willow and Daisy play and play, they get along great.  I have been taking Cypress to my dog obedience classes and she is already doing well as a demo dog!  I will take her to puppy classes in January at my friend Kathy’s dog training center, as I will enjoy being a “student” and socializing Cypress.  She is very healthy and beautiful, I get tons of comments on her.  She is still quite shy but we are working on that, and I socialize her daily, I think she will come around as she gets older.  She is very bonded with me and doesn’t wander at all, she likes to stay near me which is great.

I hope you are having a wonderful week, take care, Jan~

November 27, 2017 — Cypress and Willow

~Veterinary Visit News

(November 14, 2017) — I weighed Cypress at the vet today, she weighs 31 pounds!!!  OhMyGoodness!!!  And there is not a speck of fat on her…

(December 1, 2017) — Cypress had her sixteen-week titer and it came back fabulous so she won’t need another DAP right now.  We did her rabies vaccine, so she is set for a while.  I plan to do the two-vaccine Lepto in a bit, as we do have Lepto in this area, it is not a combo vaccine (I did that with Willow too).  Cypress is very healthy, no signs of parasites and she is gaining weight. Her condition and coat are beautiful.  She is very clumsy, she is like a foal or a fawn, she trips over her own feet and legs sometimes!  She is around 35 pounds now at four months.

~At Class With Jan

I took her to obedience class this week, she is just learning her basics and I was able to use her for demos.  I am happy now that Cypress’s immunity is in full swing, she can meet more (safe) dogs.  She is kinda shy and reserved at first with people and new situations, she is more that way than Willow was, but she is coming around.  With that type of temperament comes the very positive aspects where she stays close to me and doesn’t wander off, checks for my approval constantly, and is VERY bonded with me.  She is VERY biddable.

~Cypress and Willow (with Daisy)

24172987_10214230882749296_630886405484584027_oCypress and Willow and Daisy adore each other, they all play and play, and they all have similar gentle play styles.  I chuckle that at first Daisy was unimpressed with a new puppy in our family, but within a very short time, they became fast friends!  Willow is the best big sister ever, she is so gentle and patient with Cypress, I am so happy.  I always make sure to give each dog their separate, special time with me, while I leave the other two outside or whatever- I feel that is one of the reasons I have always had multiple dogs that get along.

Talk to you soon, Hugs, Jan

PS: I am always happy to be a reference as you know!

Thank you, Jan. We know she is already a superstar in the making. All our readers are watching with us to hear the news of Cypress. Of course, we are saddened that she is growing up at the same time. They just do not stay babies long enough.
