Macy

First Hunt

     ~Birds are Great

First time out hunting with Macy today she did great. She was a little slow at the start but picked it up and had a great day. Very proud Poppa. Thank you so much.

Around Home

Yes, Indeed, I still have to share her with my son. They are still the best of friends–which is a good thing. She is very well behaved outside can’t say the same for the inside. She loves the food that she thinks we leave for her on the counter.

We are happy to hear that Macy is in the field successfully. We love to get hunt testimonials. Bernie is an excellent hunter. Boone comes from solid working hunt lines–but he has not had as many opportunities to hunt as Bernie. The offspring have proven to be excellent hunting companions. Thanks for remembering us, Don.

We also appreciate your loyalty. It has been a long time as well as a long distance relationship. Of course, the fact that you had to fly to the West Coast and somehow this all converged was outstanding.

Waiting

What’s For Dinner?

     ~I think you’re late~

Dear Cliff and Shela,

Mesquite wants to know when she can have dinner. She has plans other than ours–we keep her on a schedule. Otherwise, she gets us up at 5 AM. We adore her and think she is gorgeous. Look at her next to the hose–just lovely!IMG_0571

Thanks for all the updates. It is great to know she is doing well and very much loved.

It’s Me

Bella Blue

    ~Says, “Woof!”

IMG_0862.JPG

Can you see me? It’s me Bella Blue, but my mom mostly calls me Boo. I’m busy lizard hunting this morning! I have to wear a reflective collar at night so my mom can find me in the dark! IMG_0850Squirrel and lizard hunting is hard, so you’ll find me on the couch in the evening. I’m 3 yrs old now and loving life!

Take care,

Bella (Boo) BlueIMG_0849

Breeder Comment

Thanks ever so much ‘Boo’! What a fabulous Call-Name. We used to have a kitty named ‘Boo-boo’–that is a bit silly, isn’t it?

I can see you have important work–entertaining the humans and keeping the yard safe. Everyone needs a job–whether it is traditional or made up–like mine. Haha, Cliff and I are happy to hear you are doing well, much-loved, and tending to business.

About Moxie Blue

Greetings from California!

Wanted to give you a quick update on Moxie Blue.  She is a fantastic girl and I can’t tell you how much we adore her.  image1

Upland Game

Cliff, I upland hunt and only started shortly before Moxie came home with us.  We’ve learned so much together, it’s one of our favorite things to do together.

For Those Wondering

About that long coat…she is the softest thing I’ve ever felt.  If you don’t know the Weims, they cuddle hard!  It’s just what they do.  Her silver undercoat is very soft like down but she doesn’t shed like a lab.  This breed is very people interactive.  She wants to be with us, on us, tell us about it and is not shy showing it.  I love her beautiful tail and her eyes.  Those eyes!

Breeder Comment

Hello! Cliff and I remember when you contacted us about a puppy. The only thing we had available was a Blue Longhair. I have said this more than once to someone over the last few years, “I don’t think you would ever be sorry.” It delights us that we were right.
I know–no one believes the hair is not going to be an issue. It is especially true when they are vacuuming hair from the house for months after the beloved Labrador departed. They are looking for a smooth coat for the reasons you might imagine. Well, some folks love the idea of their dog having a tail. Others not so much–they prefer the docked tail. We do not dock the Longhair tail on request. Some folks request their traditional smooth coat have the European-style undocked tail. We will do that, but the Longhair is meant to have the tail always.

At Six

The Amazing Dodger

LaPrelle's Dodger_4703
I just wanted to say thank you for an amazing dog, hunter and companion Dodger has been over the years. As he approaches 6 years I could not be happier to have him as a pet.

Our First Solo Hunt

~When it takes a bit for the human to catch onLaPrelle's Dodger at 6

On our first solo hunt together for pheasants, I learned something. Before then, I never knew how good Dodger was because all the other dogs were just a little bit more on track during past hunts. This time, when it was only him and me when his first bird jumped early (as most wild birds do now) I took two shots. I grounded the pheasant but it took off running. So, we began our search. I kept Dodger close to me as we walked in circles back and forth in the direction I thought the bird went. Dodger kept wanting to go back behind us but I was sure the bird could not have circled back. I finally gave in and all of a sudden Dodger put one leg up, nose to ground and tail as straight as an arrow. I looked at him with a puzzled look on my face mostly of frustration as the grass was short and I could see nothing, I stood next to him trying to get him to move–to do anything but point at the ground. He kept looking at me as if I’m the one who needs to do something, It finally clicked. It was my job to flush the bird it’s his to point and retrieve. I took two steps forward and the rest is history.

Breeder Comment

Cliff nor I will ever correct one of our hunters who is insisting their Weimaraner needs to flush the birds. Nonetheless, it should be noted that the Weimaraner is a Versatile Hunting Dog that points. This story and a perfect example of what you want the Weimaraner to do in the field. Thank you, for sharing this and updating us on Dodger.

Kaizer

First Snow

Kaizer1239a
No Snow Here

Kaizer experienced his first snow this last week, he had to stop almost every 20 feet on walks to stop and take a bite of it.  it was very comical to watch him wipe out repeatedly when he would try to chase his ball outside.

Christmas With the Gray Ghost

Surprisingly he didn’t destroy the tree or eat any ornaments and only once did I catch him proudly walking around with one of the wrapped gifts in his mouth.  when it came time to open his little gift he attacked with such ferocity that all the camera could catch was a blur.  Hope you all had a very merry Christmas and a Happy new year!

Breeder Comment

Isn’t it interesting he has his gift? You did well to capture a blurred photo. Thanks! There were several Facebook Posts where the Weimaraner got their present–didn’t touch the others. Then too–there were rumors of those who pilfered without preference at the tree. Some liking to unwrap the gifts more than anything. Others left the tree alone but not by choice.

We have not heard of any Weims eating Christmas Tree Limbs or goodies that sent them to the Emergency. For that, we are exceedingly glad. The fact the young Kaiser is doing so well speaks volumes about your work with him. Keep it up! We look forward to reading about his birding experience. Thanks for thinking of us!

Wellie

Undaunted by Adverse Conditions

Boyle's WellieTough conditions yesterday for wild birds.

Boyle's Crane 1

High winds made it tough on the dogs.

The above short clip show what I mean.

Notice the high wind and thick cover. Wellie isn’t afraid to find birds. It’s funny how he knows the spots to look. He’s got the drive. Hope all is well! ~ Tyler

Breeder Comment

Dear Tyler — You and Wellie have done well over the years. Thank you for keeping us apprised from time-to-time. Not many of our hunters are as faithful as you with updates.
Here are some memories for the readers who don’t recognize Wellie.

Mesquite

Older Girl Learning New TricksDSC_0679

Here are a few pictures of Mesquite out in the field today, south of Prosser in the Horse Heaven Hills.  I have been waiting to be sure the snakes are in for the winter.

DSC_0686
She is having a good time.  She loves to get out.
DSC_0687
Everything is going well. She eats good. Just to be sure, she reminds me when it is time to eat! We both love her dearly and are very happy with her.  She has adjusted
very well.  I think she has trained us.
I still don’t have her dialed in on hunting pheasants yet, butshe is coming
along.  I have been using pheasant wings, which I hide in the tall grass and
weeds.  She has no trouble finding them at all.  I hide them and tell her to
find the pheasant, and that light the burner and she is off.  I can’t figure
out how to get her to range out from me farther.  She has trouble with a
running bird when she gets the scent she thinks the bird is right there,
but of course, the bird has moved on.  She has trouble telling fresh scent from an old
scent.  That may be a drawback of using old wings.  She will figure it out
one of these days.  Mesquite loves to go hunting.  I get a kick out of her,
when I go somewhere and don’t take her when I get home, she goes around and
smells the tires on my Tahoe.  I guess she is checking to be sure I haven’t
been out hunting.  She is sharp as a tac.  She will click one of these days.
A big problem is there aren’t enough birds around.

Cliff says to keep working on it. You’ll get it. It is amazing how well you are doing in a very short period of time. Her lineage is well known for their ability to hunt. Thanks for loving her so much!

Grouse Opener

North Central Washington

~ Hunting Dusty and Ruffled Grouse

Dealy's George Grouse Opener2017-3

Dealy's George Grouse Opener2017-2Hi guys, I hope your summer has gone well. Just wanted to send some photos from our grouse opener weekend- (between me, a friend and George from Stackhouse and Mousse) we hit about 15 dusky and ruffed grouse over 3 days!
We were hunting in north central Washington, there’s a lot of empty public space out there. It’s not as high as our Cascades are there, normally I see mostly duskies and rarely ruffs but this was the opposite.
Dealy's George Grouse Opener2017-5
~Richard
Dealy's George Grouse Opener2017-4For those that don’t know–, these are forest grouse or mountain grouse.
Dusky/blue grouse are northwest birds but ruffed grouse are the nature northern part of the continent. You see both in thick forests and blue grouse only usually above 4 or 5000 feet.
The other American grouse species like sage grouse or prairie chickens or sharp tailed grouse are mostly plains or desert birds so that would be more likely what you’d see down your way.

Breeder Comment

We appreciate the update and news that George is proving to be a worthy Versatile Hunting Companion. The work you put in is paying dividends.
Although many non-hunters read our blog, it is important to remember that the Weimaraner is a Versatile Hunting Companion. When properly trained they can be an all-around companion and swell family member. Having a job (such as hunting) is a great outlet for them. Many non-traditional hunters are taking up Shed Hunting or Truffle hunting. Oregon Truffles are a thing! The Weimaraner nose should be ideal when trained to search for this treasure–click here! George has a job (probably more than one) and whatever the Weimaraner’s role in the household they need to do more than being a couch sitter.
The Grouse is not a frequent topic of discussion as our Sage Grouse (Sage Hens) are somewhat elusive and require a tag. The numbers are fair; however, there is great concern over their future. The wildfires that ravaged vast expanses of BLM ground during the last few years have damaged habitat. Who can gauge what the long term effect this burn off will have on these birds and other wildlife? Here are some links if this is of interest.

Kaiser

Kaizer is doing great!

Allen's Kaiser 863He’s doing well with basic commands and loves fetching his toys.  He acts all big and tough but is scared to death of kids waiting for the school buds in the early morning and freaks out when he sees his own reflection.

Allen's Kaiser 0941aThis guy is a tiny tank for now but the vet was shocked at how solid and big he looked at 9 weeks, they think he’s going to be huge.Went camping at the Sawtooth range over the weekend and he loved all the sticks to chew on.  Did some swimming and had his first leech experience.  I was pleased at how well he behaved around a bunch of strangers (only barking once the whole time) and recieved lots of admiration from all.  Lost count of all the times someone would comment on how good looking he was, one comment was even shouted from the other side of a small lake.

Thanks for pairing me up with this awesome little guy! ~Peter
