First Hunt
~Birds are Great
First time out hunting with Macy today she did great. She was a little slow at the start but picked it up and had a great day. Very proud Poppa. Thank you so much.

Yes, Indeed, I still have to share her with my son. They are still the best of friends–which is a good thing. She is very well behaved outside can’t say the same for the inside. She loves the food that she thinks we leave for her on the counter.

We are happy to hear that Macy is in the field successfully. We love to get hunt testimonials. Bernie is an excellent hunter. Boone comes from solid working hunt lines–but he has not had as many opportunities to hunt as Bernie. The offspring have proven to be excellent hunting companions. Thanks for remembering us, Don.
We also appreciate your loyalty. It has been a long time as well as a long distance relationship. Of course, the fact that you had to fly to the West Coast and somehow this all converged was outstanding.

Mesquite wants to know when she can have dinner. She has plans other than ours–we keep her on a schedule. Otherwise, she gets us up at 5 AM. We adore her and think she is gorgeous. Look at her next to the hose–just lovely!

Can you see me? It’s me Bella Blue, but my mom mostly calls me Boo. I’m busy lizard hunting this morning! I have to wear a reflective collar at night so my mom can find me in the dark!
Squirrel and lizard hunting is hard, so you’ll find me on the couch in the evening. I’m 3 yrs old now and loving life!

About that long coat…she is the softest thing I’ve ever felt. If you don’t know the Weims, they cuddle hard! It’s just what they do. Her silver undercoat is very soft like down but she doesn’t shed like a lab. This breed is very people interactive. She wants to be with us, on us, tell us about it and is not shy showing it. I love her beautiful tail and her eyes. Those eyes!

First Snow

Kaizer experienced his first snow this last week, he had to stop almost every 20 feet on walks to stop and take a bite of it. it was very comical to watch him wipe out repeatedly when he would try to chase his ball outside.
Christmas With the Gray Ghost
Surprisingly he didn’t destroy the tree or eat any ornaments and only once did I catch him proudly walking around with one of the wrapped gifts in his mouth. when it came time to open his little gift he attacked with such ferocity that all the camera could catch was a blur. Hope you all had a very merry Christmas and a Happy new year!

Isn’t it interesting he has his gift? You did well to capture a blurred photo. Thanks! There were several Facebook Posts where the Weimaraner got their present–didn’t touch the others. Then too–there were rumors of those who pilfered without preference at the tree. Some liking to unwrap the gifts more than anything. Others left the tree alone but not by choice.
We have not heard of any Weims eating Christmas Tree Limbs or goodies that sent them to the Emergency. For that, we are exceedingly glad. The fact the young Kaiser is doing so well speaks volumes about your work with him. Keep it up! We look forward to reading about his birding experience. Thanks for thinking of us!

Undaunted by Adverse Conditions
Tough conditions yesterday for wild birds.
High winds made it tough on the dogs.

Mesquite
Older Girl Learning New Tricks
Here are a few pictures of Mesquite out in the field today, south of Prosser in the Horse Heaven Hills. I have been waiting to be sure the snakes are in for the winter.
She is having a good time. She loves to get out.
Everything is going well. She eats good. Just to be sure, she reminds me when it is time to eat! We both love her dearly and are very happy with her. She has adjustedvery well. I think she has trained us.I still don’t have her dialed in on hunting pheasants yet, butshe is comingalong. I have been using pheasant wings, which I hide in the tall grass andweeds. She has no trouble finding them at all. I hide them and tell her tofind the pheasant, and that light the burner and she is off. I can’t figureout how to get her to range out from me farther. She has trouble with arunning bird when she gets the scent she thinks the bird is right there,but of course, the bird has moved on. She has trouble telling fresh scent from an oldscent. That may be a drawback of using old wings. She will figure it outone of these days. Mesquite loves to go hunting. I get a kick out of her,when I go somewhere and don’t take her when I get home, she goes around andsmells the tires on my Tahoe. I guess she is checking to be sure I haven’tbeen out hunting. She is sharp as a tac. She will click one of these days.A big problem is there aren’t enough birds around.~Lyle

Grouse Opener
North Central Washington
~ Hunting Dusty and Ruffled Grouse
Hi guys, I hope your summer has gone well. Just wanted to send some photos from our grouse opener weekend- (between me, a friend and George from Stackhouse and Mousse) we hit about 15 dusky and ruffed grouse over 3 days!
We were hunting in north central Washington, there’s a lot of empty public space out there. It’s not as high as our Cascades are there, normally I see mostly duskies and rarely ruffs but this was the opposite.~RichardFor those that don’t know–, these are forest grouse or mountain grouse.
Dusky/blue grouse are northwest birds but ruffed grouse are the nature northern part of the continent. You see both in thick forests and blue grouse only usually above 4 or 5000 feet.The other American grouse species like sage grouse or prairie chickens or sharp tailed grouse are mostly plains or desert birds so that would be more likely what you’d see down your way.

Kaiser
Kaizer is doing great!
He’s doing well with basic commands and loves fetching his toys. He acts all big and tough but is scared to death of kids waiting for the school buds in the early morning and freaks out when he sees his own reflection.
This guy is a tiny tank for now but the vet was shocked at how solid and big he looked at 9 weeks, they think he’s going to be huge.Went camping at the Sawtooth range over the weekend and he loved all the sticks to chew on. Did some swimming and had his first leech experience. I was pleased at how well he behaved around a bunch of strangers (only barking once the whole time) and recieved lots of admiration from all. Lost count of all the times someone would comment on how good looking he was, one comment was even shouted from the other side of a small lake.
