A Decade of Colby
So Much Happiness Shared

Can you believe Colby is 10? It seems like we just brought him home!
The last decade has brought us so much happiness. It’s hard to think about everything having a weimaraner has done for us and sum it all up. But if I had to sum it up in 3 words, I would say best. dog. ever!
These days, Colby prefers lazing around the house and snuggling. He doesn’t ever hesitate to tell me when it’s bedtime. Most nights, my husband comes to bed after me. So Colby takes his place and often nudges his face in my shoulder until daddy comes and kicks him out of his spot.
As he develops more gray around the muzzle, I realize that our time with him is slowly becoming more limited. Still though, we will continue to enjoy every moment we can for however many more years we are blessed to have him.
These are some favorite photos of Colby over the last 10 years along with a video celebrating his birthday. We celebrated his 10 years with a little bit of home made (doggy friendly) ice cream and some peanut butter. He was a happy boy.

Look Who’s Two!
~”it’s me, Chester–“

(April 14, 2020) For my birthday Mom and Dad got me some great presents and a cookie. My mom and Dad love me so much. It’s because I am so awesome and they just can’t help but to spoil me. Mom wasn’t feeling very good on my birthday so we just cuddled on the couch in the morning until dad woke up then he played with me. My parents have the best fur son and they are so lucky to get to love me everyday.

Thank you for keeping us apprised and in the loop, Winchester. Over the last two years, you have acquired a faithful fan base. We appreciate your photos, the newsy notes, and how you make us smile. Oh–and how you take such good care of your Mama.
Maverick

( April 8, 2020) I am a day late by Maverick celebrates his 4th birthday yesterday on 4/7. He’s just a bit loved and spoiled! He has certainly enjoyed the time we have all been spending with one another during this shelter-in-place we have going on here in California. He will get to enjoy this through the month of July as I am a teacher and get to do teaching via distance learning.
Maverick was able to go out on a few pheasant hunts this past season with Bill and my boys, Ethan (13) and Owen (11). Oh does he love to hunt those birds! He is definitely a creature of habit. If that routine breaks ritual, he is sure to be the first to let me know! It cracks my husband up how silly Maverick is.
He loves his blankets to cuddle with at night, even going as far to dragging them around the house while I get ready for bed. You ask him to fetch up his rope, he brings it back to your feet… ask him to fetch up his bow, there it is, at your feet…. this can happen until all his toys are lined up.
I’m sure we can all carry on about how silly, quirky, loyal, lovable our Velcro Weims are. Thank you for ours. He has brought us many smiles and laughs over the past 4 years.

Revelry
~My Blue Longhair Girl

Today (5/15/2019) Revelry Blue (Stackhouse x Zula Blue) turns 1! What a journey the last 10 months have been. Revelry is smart, cheeky, and full of spunk. She comes to work with me almost every day and has been a fantastic demo dog, always eager to help all the young puppies in class learn how to be the best they can be. She is a real dog’s dog, especially fond of the little ones (probably because she’s been raised with 2 little older Dachshund sisters). She is by far the calmest Weimaraner I’ve ever known and apart from a hole-digging phase, amazingly hasn’t been destructive at all.

There have been downs with all the ups as well. Revelry, while calm, has also been dealing with anxiety, spooking a lot at strange or new things. Small children have been our biggest foe. They are tiny and move weirdly, and Revelry finds them to be most alarming. That said, we have come a very long way already and are continually working hard to desensitize her to all potential scary things, large, small, and loud!
Revelry is set to take her Canine Good Citizen test next month and I am 100% certain she is going to pass! She has been such an easy dog to train and I can tell that she truly enjoys learning. People are constantly commenting on both her incredible beauty and wonderful manners. This girl occasionally tests me, but she also makes me so proud every single day. I love her to the moon.
Thank you for all that you do, but mostly for allowing me to be this sweet girl’s mom.
All our best,
Emily and Revelry

~Celebrating Maizie’s Birthday

Name That Tune
Maizie has always been a teaser! Here she is “talking” to us and trying to get our attention to play with her!🤣
The second video is the reaction to this video by my sister’s dogs in Texas as they watched/listened on her iPad!
🤣
Remy
~ Our Prima Donna

Hope this finds you and Cliff well. Attached is a picture from Remy’s birthday last month. The kids insisted that she get a special doggie cannoli from our local pet store. She is obviously spoiled.
I have been working a ton on her leash training and she’s doing much better. She is still scared of other dogs but overall we are making progress, tons of positive reinforcement and she isn’t lunging anymore. The only time we have a problem is if a dog is off leash and approaches her on the leash, but that is understandable at this point. I am hopeful that we can get past the aggressive behavior and I’m seeking some 1:1 training with a professional.
We had a scare – she was spayed last month and there were complications. The surgeon nicked a vein or something and she lost a lot of blood. They sent us home but we were concerned that she still had internal bleeding and took her to urgent care. Glad we did because she probably wouldn’t have made it. Poor thing, she did not need additional surgery luckily and had a rough recovery, but is fine now.
Anyway, until next time 😀

We are sorry to hear you have issues. To us, this sounds a lot more like a territorial behavior (which is a Weimaraner thing) mixed in with some fear. Who can guess what brought it on? There are a lot of unknowns. Here are some links that might be useful.
Dogs Go Through an Adolescent Fear Period
The worst thing to do with FNS is to force your dog to do something he’s frightened of. It’s also not a good idea to soothe or praise the dog’s fear in this situation. That can unwittingly reinforce the dog’s fearful behavior, while using force may lead to a permanent fearful response. The best approach is to be patient, be jolly, remove your dog if possible, and know that adolescence is just a period—and it’s my fervent hope that it’s short-lived.
There is some useful information in these articles; however, like every bit of dog-related advice–it is essential not to overreact or make something into more than it might become. I am always cautious when labeling a dog as aggressive–especially in a situation where they don’t like another dog in their space or even humans coming at them. This issue seems like a fear –but territorial behaviors are also a bit issue with this breed. Don Wilbur (a long time Weimaraner breeder /expert) said of them, “they may be the most territorial of breeds.”
Territorial behaviors may express in many ways — protecting their crate, their fence line, a corner of the room, etc.

Dogs and Territorial Behaviors
Quite possibly the most successful way to deal with this behavior in our experience is to remove the trigger and not to force the issue. I think we expect that we will be able to do everything with our fur family member and sometimes it is not possible. Seriously, every environment is unique. We each have different leadership skills–and worst of all when we are disappointed or frustrated our Weimaraner picks up on the cues. This information may help someone. I think it is essential to realize there is any number of things that can occur. There is not always an easy solution. Thank you to Remy’s family for all the hard work and making her life special. And Happy Birthday Remy!
