Winchester

My Best Friend

         ~ Our Seven Years

Seven years ago my best friend was born. Since then, there have been chewed up passports, coffee spills, emergency vet visits, stitches, and so many tears. But there has also been joy and laughter. There have been couch snuggles, long hikes to hidden mountain lakes, 9-hour road trips full of ears flapping in the wind and loud tunes. There has been so much love. Thank you for loving me in the most unconditional manner, and allowing me to love you.

                                             Happy Birthday, Winchester.   ~ Jaime

Breeder Comment

There have been many changes in your life since we first met. Thank you, for loving Winchester so much. We love hearing about all your adventures. Life is a journey. May Chester (Aka-Winchester) live long and celebrate many more birthdays.

Brews and Barks

Yesterday at the base of Silver Mountain Resort here in Kellogg (Idaho) they had a “brews and barks” event. It was a fund raiser for H.E.L.P. which is an organization that helps animals. They had a bunch of microbrew beers too for the adult furparents 🙂 it was amazing.

Chester went to Barks and Brews, and I stayed home to take snooze… :O)

Chester got to go. Pokey had to stay home, she gets much too nervous to have been around that many people and pets. We missed her, but I know she was happier and safer at home!

New Friends for Winchester

Winchester made so many friends! A little Boston Terrier, a Boxer. Attention from SO many people who wanted to know what breed he was. (Aren’t Weimaraners really light and grey usually) so I explained all about blues. How he’s still AKC registered even though they don’t recognize his colors. And how blues are looked down on and thought to have more health problems and not that great of temperaments. Which Chester surely showed them is not true!

Winchester Impressed Everyone He Met

They told me he is the most beautiful weim they’ve ever seen. I was thinking “if only you could see my two lookers together!” I also wrote down your guys’ website on napkins more than I can count. Will probably be bringing business cards to doggy events from now on! 🙂

Chester with his medal croppedBest Tail Wag Contest

I signed my little boy up for “best tail wag contest” and out of about 15 dogs Chester was the only one who had a nub tail! Numerous people said to me “he doesnt have a tail!” People hating on his little nubbin! He ended up placing third! YAYYY Chester! He got a bag of treats, a toy, and a medal! I took pictures of him, he was so proud!!

Things are great here in Kellogg.

Summer has come around, and we’ve been taking full advantage. Pokey absolutely adores sun bathing! Hope everything down there is well, hugs and puppy kisses from Jamie, Pokey and Winchester!225542_10150188866733903_503123902_6910590_3521796_n

Breeder’s Note: The American Standard for the traditional adult Weimaraner calls for about a six inch tail. Winchester has a nice tail. In Europe, the Weimaraner has undocked tails across the board. Around the world, the breed standard for the longhair is the undocked tail.

The Happy Puppy

As humans, we tend to interpret the needs of our puppy based on our own perceptions.  Although following the golden rule is a good idea in most cases, it often creates the opposite result with the Weimaraner puppy.

The whining, wailing, howling Weimararaner puppy, is rarely in need of anything. Sure a person needs to be sure they have their basis needs taken care of, and these needs in and of their self are time consuming. A puppy will need to potty frequently. They sleep a lot. The Weimaraner pup needs to eat three times a day. The need to have ample water at the right time and should have the opportunity to drink several times a day. If the weather is temperate, it might be wise to let them drink while they are outside. Some might find it a good idea to feed and water outside and then go directly to the deck. These things are determined by your schedule and your environment. Many decisions are preferential. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the decisions the new puppy owner makes are based on their wanting the puppy to be happy.

The Weimaraner owner who focuses on the puppy’s happiness will soon discover that they have been well-trained. The puppy who has their owner running to their every beck-and-howl can use this for a lifetime of manipulation.

A large crate is deemed important for the pup’s comfort. Many pups will then set up housekeeping. One end is their sleeping area, and the other is their potty area. For this reason, it is better to start with a small crate that not much larger than the pup. They need plenty of room to stand up, turn around, and sprawl. Soon you will discover they are plastered against the door. This is the same no matter the size of the crate, so don’t read too much into the pressing mesh against their face. Once they are house-trained, then you can move up to the comfortably sized crate.

Our suggestion is to stick to the basics, and not to let the howling, biting, and constant demands dictate what you do. Depend upon good crate-training to help you get the pup house trained, and raised. Never use the crate for punishment. It is not a doggy jail. It can be used to keep the Weimaraner puppy safe, and to protect your home when you cannot be vigilant. It can be used for a time out.
Keeping your eye on a young Weimaraner puppy is one of the basics of getting them trained and raised. A pup left to their own wiles, will surely pick up bad habits and get into trouble. Finally think of your pup’s happiness being a part of the journey. You and they will get to the desired result, but it will take time. Keeping the puppy happy by holding and catering to them will prove the undoing of the best-laid plan. Whereas, teaching them to quiet and calm in their crate, and not overreacting to each demand will yield the desired outcome. Make no mistake, we know for many of you this is truly a difficult task. It is hard if not impossible for you not to feel bad, and to not molly-coddle the adorable Weimaraner puppy.

Two Blue Weimaraners in the UK

Bolt Looking Good

Bolt investigates the Bird Feeding Station

Breeder’s Note:  About exactly a year ago, we exported two blue Weims to the UK. They went to a lovely couple who live and work on a large shooting estate in Norfolk. Marie Claire has more than eight years experience with the Weimaraner. She also raises and shows horses, and she is personally very involved in the hunting aspect. William is the head gamekeeper. To his credit, he is one of the youngest head gamekeepers in the UK. He has worked on the estate for more than 13 years. It is noteworthy too, that he has trained gun dogs for longer than he has been a gamekeeper. So, when the opportunity presented itself, we wanted to see if it was possible. After about almost six months of work and planning, we were able to meet the criteria and arrange the transport. It was no small undertaking. Bolt and Pete were accompanied during the transport to the UK, which made things much better for them. As you might guess, the trip and the transition was hard on them, but a year later they are thriving and making us proud!

Last month, we received a note from someone in the UK who wanted to thank us for making this opportunity possible. What a lovely gesture it was to write to us, but they love their puppy.

Marie Claire reports: Bolt is so eager to please and needs constant stimulation to keep her happy.

Pete on the go

She permenantly hunts and is always on the go. She is so driven.  Of all her traits, the one we love the most is her smiling. She doesn’t stop smiling!

As you know, Pete bonded instantly to me, and has not took much interest in working for Will. Regardless, he has done well already as a Stud Dog.

Pete looking good too!

We are pleased with him, but he is a Mama’s boy. He has good hunt instinct, and attributes that benefit our breeding program. We plan to raise a litter this spring with Liezel who is due in season anytime Feb to April  ( and she is showing early signs now according to Pete),

~

Note: Regardless of what you think about the Blue Weimaraner, they exist. The Weimaraner is a sporting breed. For this reason, one of the biggest complaints about the blues, is few are proven in the field. We believe if more effort is made to prove them in the field, they can receive some validation. Some Americans want to form a separate breed club for the blue, and break off from the Weimaraner. We see that option as having many pros and cons; those of which would take a great deal of time to address. Let is suffice to say, the Blue Weimaraner can be registered with AKC, but is not allowed to compete in AKC or WCA Show events. There are other events in which the blue can compete and earn a title. There are avenues whereby the blue can receive assessment of their conformation.

Remi of Vancouver, Washington

David & Remi April 2010

We wanted to give you guys an update on Remi.

He’s doing great, super active.  Loves going out in the fields for training and running around, very birdie.

He’s great with all his training and commands.  Super intelligent, he’s figured out how to get away with stuff 😉

He’s great with other dogs, he even gets to play with Arliss every once in awhile.

He loves being right next to us and gets really anxious if he can’t find one of us.

This summer we’re excited to take him camping and seeing how he does.  He only really barks in the house when someone comes down the stairs but we’re working on getting him to stop.

Remi Training April 2010

Our Remington afield!

We love having him around and can’t wait to get him a playmate in a year or so.  We hope you like these photos!

Thanks again for such a great dog!

Theo is a hit at home and around town…

Theo is just getting more handsome every day!

Theo (Maudie X Zeke 2009)

Theo with Nate!

Theo is such a great companion that we are wanting to get another Weimaraner. If you plan on breeding Maudie and Zeke we are interested in being considered.  We are not going to breed as you know but we were thinking a female (little sister) might make the perfect playmate.

Theo is our little prince right now, but we definitely think he would love the companionship of another Weim as time goes by.

Theo Helps Unwrap Packages!

We are getting him fixed Feb. 2!  Also getting the microchip and his Rabies.  He’ll be almost 7 months – we can’t believe how fast time has flown.

We go on hour long walks at least once per day and to the doggy park on the weekends.

Every one we meet say he one of the best looking dogs they’ve seen.

He’s great with other dogs and with people he knows or doesn’t know – he is very very friendly :o). He is the sunshine in our lives and a total “mommy’s boy” :O)

Theo Naps

Thanks so much for your dedication and love to your Weims – we don’t know what we would do without our boy.

We appreciate Theo’s Family…

Boone prepares for Christmas…

Boone (Maudie X Zeke 2009)

Boone front and center with Santa and his human siblings are getting ready for Christmas with a photo shoot.

Boone’s Family Reports:

I will say that we get A LOT of compliments from people on Boone.  We get them from people that just think he’s cute or that can’t believe how good looking he is.  However, we also get quite a few from people that either have or are familiar with the breed that can’t believe what a good temperament he has.  He is fun, yet mellow.  He loves people and is always ready to dispense with a lick or or two.  We can count the accidents he has had inside on one hand, and those are all our fault.  He has never chewed on anything or been destructive in any way.  He does love to eat though.  If he even thinks there may be food involved he is there.  Boone cracks us up constantly with his leg crossing and listening like he is part of the conversation and is thinking deeply about what is being said.  Our vet says she has never seen a dog quite like him.

Reports of other photo sessions have hit our Email as well. Boone’s is the first arrival for the season.

We feel prophetic inspiration…

We predict many Weimaraner theme Christmas Cards…
