Sherlock (Part Six)
~Lucas – Age 18

In a few months I’m going to go off to college and I don’t think anything can prepare me for how much I’m going to miss Sherlock. When people say dogs are man’s best friend, they’re right. I’ve spent more time with him over these last four years than anybody else besides my family. How am I going to fall asleep without him curling up in my bed at night? Who am I going to play tug with? Who am I going to throw the Chuck-it to? Nothing feels as freeing as dropping everything and sprinting down the trail or the beach with Sherlock. A boy and his dog running as fast as they can, feeling the wind rush past, overjoyed to be with each other. He loves nothing more than to run, play, and be really weird. He always accepts me, no matter what. I never have to filter myself or tone myself down when I’m with him. In fact, I don’t even think about it because his love is unconditional. I didn’t understand what this word meant until I had a weimaraner, and now I can never forget.
One of the purest things I’ve ever seen is the excitement that comes out of Sherlock when we get ready to go on a hike. As soon as I put my socks on, he perks up. When the boots are getting laced up, he is now standing next to me. He then leads the way downstairs, nudges his leash hanging from the coat rack, and sits down. He begins to whine when I start filling up the water bottles. But he’s not yet sure if he’s coming or not. The best part is when I grab his leash. His tail becomes a blur, his ears tuck back, he spins in circles, and he yelps with excitement. It is the happiest thing in the world for him. It fills my heart every time I get to witness this. Sherlock constantly reminds me how much joy there is to be found in life. He inspires me to be myself and do what feels right. I’m in awe of him every day.

Lucas–thank you for taking the time to share your experience. You are right about missing Sherlock–do they not worm their way into your heart? Oh yeah! During a time such as this–our fur family members keep us covered with a special love and acceptance that is not easily put into a few words. I am positive that your absence will affect Sherlock as much as you–but he will have other family members there to help him adjust. It will not be quite as easy for you, but with the leaving, a new chapter in your life begins. Thanks again for the share–it is most appreciated.
