Remember Mesquite?

On The Mend

~ Beyond Lucky

I wanted to let you know that Mesquite is on the mend–finally, I think! She is one mighty lucky dog. She was within a whisker from disaster.

I took her off the Carprofen and put her on the Duralactin. The Carprofen was just knocking her for a loop, all she wanted to do is sleep. She is normal now. I took her for a short walk this morning. She was bugging me to go. I am sure she gets tired of being cooped up in the house. I am sleeping on the couch right next to her crate at night. She goes out once during the night. I also keep her from licking the incision. I keep a T-shirt on her at night.

The fluid has gone down a lot. I sure don’t want to have to put a drain in the wound.

She sure is a good dog, never gives you any trouble. She will let you know when she doesn’t like something. For example–she doesn’t like to be sprayed with the Vetericyn Plus. It might be cold, I wouldn’t think it should sting. That stuff works! She sees me coming with the Vetericyn, and she starts doing the slow walk, with the head down.

She is feeling a lot better. I hope it continues. This an impossible time to have to get into the vet, with holidays.

Breeder Comment

We are happy to hear that Mesquite continues to improve. It was a scary accident, to say the least. I am glad you are getting her off of the Carprofen (AKA-Rimadyl). We understand it is the go-to anti-inflammatory drug of choice. Nevertheless, we have the first-hand experience with a young Stud Dog who had a severe reaction. After taking the medication for a few days, he developed uncontrollable seizures–we lost him as a result. He was not even six-months-old. Then two other clients who used the Rimadyl had a similar experience. We recommend trying to avoid this drug if at all possible. We are happy you have opted to move to the Duralactin.
