There is a lot of talk about the natural ability of a versatile hunting dog. The Weimaraner is considered a versatile hunter. The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) defines versatility as “the dog that is bred and trained to dependably hunt and point game, to retrieve on both land and water, and to track wounded game on both land and water.”

Preparing for the Hunt Test

It is no small task to prepare for the NAVHDA Natural Ability Hunt Test. We won’t go into details, but those experienced in this venue would be quick to tell you it requires some dedicated effort, a bit of knack, and the right pup. A combination of your ability to train and influence the dog as well as you relationship plays into the end result. Nevertheless, there are exact disciplines which must be tackled. The better the performance; the higher the score. Once you have achieved the NAVHDA Natural Ability Test and earned a Prize I, II, or III you may wnat to participate in the more advanced venues.

Rodney and Molly

Rodney and Molly achieved the Prize One NAVHDA Natural Ability status in October 2013.  They are training toward the ultimate goal–A Utility Title. As you can see, these kind fo skills take a good deal of time to develop. There are ups and downs–more challenges than anyone would like to see. Nothing worth doing comes easy.
