Is a Weimaraner good with children?

Despite the puppy biting Weims, in general the Weimaraner seems to forge a very close relationships. This includes with babies and children of the family. We get a lot of photos that include children.

An interesting fact is that many of the people who contact us remember a Weimaraner their family had when they were growing up. They normally talk about the fact they had several dogs but the Weim was always special.

Many of these people got a Weimaraner after WWII when they became the rage. They were cited as they versatile fits all dog. Cliff’s first Weimar (click here ). Here is a picture of Cliff as a young lad on this very farm with the first Nielsen Weimaraner. He never forgot that dog!

As with anything you do, care needs to taken when introducing a child to a dog. We recommend supervision and caution be exercised. We never allow a Weimaraner to be aggressive towards a child (or for that matter at a person or another dog). There are times when a correction must be given for the benefit of all concerned including your Weimaraner. Unfortunately, a cookie reward for every good behavior will not solve every problem. In fact, we hate to say this but sometimes treat can actually cause a problem.

There is a balance in every type of training. Yes, we use treats on occasion. Most of the time, however, we rely on our relationship for compliance. Lavishing praise and petting them is often better than a treat. Regardless, there are some things we have used a treat for exclusively such kenneling. If we ask them to kennel up and they run in we give them a treat while they stand and wait. It makes the kenneling process go smoothly and gives them something to look forward to.

As for Weims and children we continue to amazed at how each situation seems to work out.

Babies in particular seem to be of great interest to the Weimaraner. Even Weims who have been in the home long before the baby arrives seem to adjust and take ownership of the newest family member.

On other occasions the puppy arrives to find a ready-made family. Directly after last Christmas G2 arrived and began making himself at home.
